5 Costly Mistakes Factory Owners Make When Buying Packaging

By Mega Polybag Team  |  Updated: Oct 2025  |  Industry Insights

In the packaging business, we often see purchase managers trying to save 10 paisa on a bag, only to lose thousands of rupees later because of spillage, transit damage, or brand reputation loss.

Buying PP Woven bags seems simple, but the "specs" matter. Here are the 5 technical mistakes you must avoid to keep your product safe.

1. Falling for the "Cheap GSM" Trap

GSM (Grams per Square Meter) determines the thickness of the fabric. Many suppliers will offer you a lower price by reducing the GSM.

The Risk: If you are packing 50kg of sharp granules or heavy chemicals, a low-GSM bag will not hold the weight during lifting. It might burst in the truck. Always ask us to calculate the Safe Working Load (SWL) for your specific product density.

2. Ignoring the "UV Factor" (Sunlight Damage)

Do you store your bags in an open yard? Or are they transported on open trucks?

Standard Polypropylene reacts poorly to sunlight. Without protection, the plastic becomes brittle and turns into powder within 2-3 weeks of sun exposure.

The Fix: You must specify "UV Stabilized Fabric." We add a special chemical additive during the extrusion process that acts like sunscreen for your bags.

Pro Tip: Even if you buy UV bags, cover your stock with a dark tarpaulin. No plastic lasts forever under direct Indian summer sun.

3. Guessing the Bag Size (Dimensions)

A bag that is 1 inch too narrow will tear at the seams when filled. A bag that is 2 inches too long wastes storage space and makes your pallet unstable.

Don't just say "Give me a 50kg bag." The volume depends on your product. 50kg of Cement takes up less space than 50kg of Groundnut Shells. Send us a sample of your product, and we will engineer the perfect dimension to save you fabric costs.

4. Treating Printing as an Afterthought

Your bag is your cheapest billboard. If you are selling a consumer product (like Rice or Wall Putty), a blurry, cheap-looking bag tells the customer your product is low quality.

The Upgrade: Moving from standard Flexo printing to BOPP Laminated Printing costs slightly more per bag, but it can increase your sales by 20% because your product looks premium on the shop shelf.

5. Skipping the Pre-Shipment Trial

Never place a bulk order of 50,000 bags based on a phone call. Specifications can be misunderstood.

At Mega Polybag, we insist on sending you a Free Sample Batch first. We want you to fill it, drop it, and test it in your factory. Only when you are 100% satisfied do we start mass production.
